Food is an interesting topic. A lot of things revolve around food. Culture, family, traditions, fellowship, honor, pleasure, health, gluttony, and fasting.
It is also a way of being set apart.
For example there’s the Nazirite Vow in Judges 13:7 & 14:
“But he said to me, ‘You will become pregnant and have a son. Now then, drink no wine or other fermented drink and do not eat anything unclean, because the boy will be a Nazirite of God from the womb until the day of his death.’”
“She must not eat anything that comes from the grapevine, nor drink any wine or other fermented drink nor eat anything unclean. She must do everything I have commanded her.”
Or the consecration found in Leviticus 11:44-45:
“For I am the Lord your God. You shall therefor consecrate yourselves, and you shall be holy; for I am holy. Neither shall you defile yourselves with any creeping thing that creeps on the earth. for I am the lord who brings you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God. You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.”
Or even fasting, like in Daniel 1:5-16:
“Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.” (v.12,13)
There are so many examples in the Bible about food; so, what is the point? Why is food so important beyond survival?
I think it comes down to this in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20:
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
This may be a different context, but I do think it applies. If we are serving God with our bodies, then why would we also kill it by feeding it the wrong food?
What if God is inviting us to something different, something better? Perhaps instead of just eating the way we always have, we could ask God if there if a different or better way he wants you to think about food. The impact may actually go beyond nutrition!
